atelierdb were asked to provide a showcase club for virgin active at 200 aldersgate, in the basement of the newly refurbished offices above undertaken by bnp paribas. previously the basements provided leisure facilities for clifford chance, the law firm that occupied the offices above.
a large existing 20m long pool, arranged in two wings, was modified to provide a main training pool and a separated spa pool. the original pool depth (2m) was reduced to be 1.2m, requiring aerated concrete to be pumped down into the basement level through existing skylights. the original 2 skylights were retained, and new ceiling upstands repeated over the pool + spa areas to the same size as the rooflights to create the effect of more natural light being present, with the use of LED secret fittings.
opulent changing rooms + shower cubicles, with dark timber effect plank tiling to walls and high spec grohe rainshower fittings, create a club experience of superior quality appropriate for the city of london.
the design looks to setup and retain transparency across the club, with key walls having glazing to permit views but control noise. an executive lounge was created at the club, offering members a very high level of service and accommodation before or after their exercise.
