Longstaff Road, Wandsworth

Our clients approached us with a brief to add a loft with ensuite, and a 6x6m ground floor extension. The neighbours didn’t object to our neighbour consultation scheme application and so off we went! The loft represented some design adaptations to the house, requiring the first floor ceiling to be lowered to avoid the new loft roof being visible from the street.

At 6m’s deep, the ground floor extension needed some special thinking to make sure we got natural light deep into the floorplate and the kitchen which was to remain in the same location. The roof form was inspired by old industrial rooflights on railway/mill buildings and applied using modern systems to punch light deep into the house. Slimline sliding doors were used on the rear elevation to maximise visibility. Due to the striking form of the roof we needed a quality finish and vmzinc anthra was used to give dark sharp lines to the roofform.
